Matt Schulz Earns Historic World Championship
January 17, 2010
Schulz hoists the coveted Snow Goer Cup after winning the World Championship.
The Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby is always about history, but Matt Schulz’ victory Sunday at the famed Derby track truly was one for the ages.
By winning in dominating fashion with a green-to-checkered run, Wausau, Wisconsin’s Schulz became:
- The first Wisconsin driver since Dale Loritz in 1995 to keep the Snow Goer Cup in its own state.
- The first Polaris driver to win the World Championship since Steve Thorsen claimed the title in 1978.
- The second second-generation driver to win snowmobiling’s premier race – following his uncle and lead mechanic Al Fenhaus, the 1993 champion, much like Terry Wahl followed in the footsteps of his uncle Dave Wahl.
- The comeback racer of the year. A year ago, Schulz showed up at Eagle River wearing a halo – he broke his neck the previous weekend at the USSA oval race in Plymouth, Wisconsin, and was forced to watch the World Championship race – without turning his head.
Schulz was fast all weekend, claiming the fast time in Thursday’s trials and winning his heat and semi-final in Saturday’s qualifying. The only time he was beat on the track was in the Friday Night Thunder Program, when a clutching issues relegated him to second behind three-time champion PJ Wanderscheid.
Matt Schulz was flawless in the 25-lap final, and collected $20,000 for the effort.
Sunday, the roles were reversed. Schulz clutching was dialed in perfectly, as his Larry Rugland Motorsports-powered mod rocketed off the starting line and into turn one ahead of a star-studded field that included four ex-champions that had claimed a combined 10 world titles (Jacques Villeneuve 3; Wanderscheid 3; Gary Moyle 2; Brian Bewcyk, 2).
Wanderscheid settled into second, with the surprising Jason Lavallee claiming third for several laps. He was followed by an angry pack in the early going, with Dan Fenhaus on his heels, Malcolm Chartier in fourth and Dustin Wahl in fifth.
Deep in the pack, the two former champs who started in the back row after qualifying through Sunday’s last chance qualifier, Villeneuve and Moyle, tried to fight through traffic. By lap six in the 25-lap final, Villeneuve was up to seventh in the 12-lap field.

JACQUES VILLENEUVE PROMISES TO BE PART OF THE UPCOMING GRAND PRIX SKI-DOO DE VALCOURT
January 8, 2009
RELEASE: Valcourt, January 8, 2009 – Since 1986, there has been only a few Grand Prix Ski-Doo de Valcourt editions that Jacques Villeneuve, by far the most passionate and most courageous driver of Canada’s motorsport history, has not entered. Comes February 20, 21 and 22, expect the St-Cuthbert (Québec) veteran to honour his annual rendez-vous with his fans. He intends to show up healthy, having fully recovered after an accident in the season’s opener at Beausejour (Manitoba) left him with a broken leg. In fact, as he stated this week, he could have entered the Eagle River vintage weekend kicking off tomorrow, or the World Championship Snowmobile Derby next week. But wisdom has prevailed and Villeneuve will instead return to the track at Boonville (New York), January 31st and February 1st.
‘’My thighbone has healed well. I don’t still put all my weight on my wounded leg but I could have raced my friend Guy Montminy’s vintage sled this weekend”, says Villeneuve who for a change, doesn’t sound frustrated to be home and away from the iced ovals. He adds: ‘‘ I felt that I had to be a little more cautious and choose to return to the track only at the end of the month. This way, I have better chances to do all of the Eastern Pro Tour races including of course, going back to Valcourt where I couldn’t race last year.”
For the legendary driver who turned fifty a few years ago and can claim a little less than forty winter seasons spent on the iced oval tracks, evidently the flame is still burning. Although, he admits that he is seing some things differently now. ‘’There is stuff that I don’t like or wish to do anymore. For example, I am no longer spending my nights working on my sleds. I let others play the mechanics. On the other hand, I still enjoy travelling and of course being the fastest on track. Here at home, not much beats a walk to the shop in my garage and the sound of an engine on my dyno. I am always willing to devote plenty of time for more power”, says a very serene Villeneuve.

Felegy Racing Signs with HMK
October 20, 2008
Hood River, Oregon – If you’re the type who keeps score you know that HMK USA products are used by some of the fastest snowmobile racers and most talented riders on the planet. You can add Shane Felegy and Felegy Racing to that list as HMK USA and Felegy Racing announced that they have signed a three-year sponsorship deal. Felegy Racing will showcase HMK outerwear at some of the biggest ice oval races in snowmobile racing including Eagle River and Beausejour.
“I talked to Kirk Zack at HMK and we immediately hit it off,” said Shane Felegy. “He gets racers, he knows what racers need and he’s all about supporting the sport. We inked a great deal and I’m really happy. It’s going to be a great partnership.”
HMK owner Kirk Zack agrees. “I’m super-stoked to be working with Shane,” said Zack. “He’s a hard-working racer and is totally focused on winning, and winning big. That’s exactly what HMK is all about and I’m confident he’ll win it all while representing us in a 100 percent positive way.”
Felegy has set his sights on a World Championship and is looking to make a serious run at it in the coming years.
“We’re gearing up to make a serious run at the World Championship in Eagle River so this season will consist mostly of testing with the Champ sled,” said Shane Felegy. “Signing this deal with HMK takes some pressure off me to secure a gear sponsor and it also adds to our great lineup of sponsors that includes Polaris and Aggressive Hydraulics.”
